Scouts

Welcome to our scout’s place…

Cub Scout Pack 189 is sponsored by the Brotherhood of Temple B’nai Torah. We thank them for their support. For more information, log onto www.troop189ny.com

Boy Scout Troop 189, sponsored by the TBT Brotherhood, has a very exciting and adventurous program again this year.  We just got back from a very successful surf-fishing trip to Montauk. We caught a lot of fish especially monster stripers. Later this month, we will participate in our Council’s Centennial Jamboree at Eisenhower Park. Upcoming camping trips include, Snow Tubing in Connecticut, West Point, Blue Nose (where we camp in tents in February) and a trip to the state of Maine.  This past summer, many of the boys in the Troop went to Onteora Boy Scout Camp and earned over 100 merit badges.  Last year, a member of the Troop earned the highest rank that scouts can earn, the Eagle Rank.  Congratulations to Charles Hillman.  This year, two more boys are working on their Eagle project hoping to earn the rank of Eagle. Once an Eagle Scout, always an Eagle Scout.  The rank of Eagle looks great on a college application.  Come join the fun, make friends, and learn new skills.  We meet in the youth lounge of our temple Thursdays at 7:30 pm.

Cub Scout Pack 189 is having a very active program as well. Next month, we will be having an overnight at the Philadelphia Zoo.  After a day of sightseeing, we will sleep in the zoo’s “tree house”.  Then spend Sunday at the zoo.  We will also have our annual Thanksgiving dinner where the boys celebrate our pack “family” and donate food to the less fortunate.

This year we kick off our annual Coats for Kids campaign this month. Please donate a used coat to help those be a little warmer this winter season.

If your son is in grades 1 thru 5 and is interested in joining Cub Scout Pack 189, please come down to a meeting on Thursday’s 6:15 in the TBT Youth Lounge.

Check out all our pictures and events at www.troop189ny.comThe Tiger Cub program is for first grade (or age 7) boys and their adult partners. There are five Tiger Cub achievement areas. The Tiger Cub, working with his adult partner, completes 15 requirements within these areas to earn the Tiger Cub Badge. These requirements consist of an exciting series of indoor and outdoor activities just right for a boy in the first grade.

Cub Scouts are boys in Grades 1-5. Cub Scouting is a family and home-centered program for boys in the second through fifth grade (or 8, 9, and 10 years old). The emphasis is on quality program at the local level, where the most boys and families are involved. Fourth- and fifth-grade (or 10-year-old) boys are called Webelos (WE’ll BE LOyal Scouts) and participate in more advanced activities that begin to prepare them to become Boy Scouts. Cubs meet as a “pack” monthly and in smaller “Dens” more frequently.

Boy Scouting is a program for boys in Grades 6 and up (ages 11 through 17). The program is designed to achieve the aims of Scouting through a vigorous outdoor program and peer group leadership with the counsel of an adult Scoutmaster. (Boys also may become Boy Scouts if they have earned the Arrow of Light Award or have completed the fifth grade.) Troop 189 is a very active camping and outdoors troop that goes out on overnight camping trips year-round. The Troop meets weekly, and every summer we spend a week upstate at Scout Camp.

All of our volunteer leaders take training from the Boy Scouts of America. To contact us or for more information about our programs (including lots of pictures of our Temple’s Scouts) please visit: Boy Scouts Troop 189. The Troop has a long history of honoring requirements from families who keep kosher or have other special requirements.
